Page of notes from "Enchantment" by Guy Kawasaki

My obsessive note-taking continues, this time with Guy Kawasaki's new book, Enchantment.  It's a fun read with stellar anecdotes.

Dietary "Cheat Day" in NYC -- Hill Country Chicken Feast

Photo

If you're in NYC, get fried chicken at 25th and Broadway.  Seriously.  The best fried chicken I've had on the east coast.  Bring your insulin pump.

Thanks to Ramit for the recommendation!

Answers to the question: how do I prevent a PDF from being shared?

For a project involving my publisher, I asked the following on Facebook and Twitter: "Question: any good way to DRM PDFs or otherwise make them less share-able if someone is selling them as e-books? Will share responses..."

At the end of the day, DRM doesn't work.  Devoted hackers -- hell, even a motivated 10-year old -- can break it, take screenshots, or whatever.  In some cases (as Paulo Coelho, among others, believes), giving away "pirated" copies sells more books for authors.  But, when it comes to the publisher, the question is: how do we prevent sharing?

There are generally two approaches: technical and social.  If you're going to try and minimize sharing, I prefer the latter, as it doesn't punish or inconvenience paying customers/users/readers.

Here are some of the solutions proposed (separated by ###):

Adobe Acrobat Pro or

###

I do sell ebooks through ejunkie.com and I have them set up so it automatically prints the name and email address of the person buying it on every page. Doesn't keep 'em from being shared but many make people think twice about doing it

@tferriss Nifty and cheap plugin that stamps PDF with cust. info if they use Wordpress to sell the ebooks:http://tinyurl.com/2a5qjs9

Also:

www.memberwing.com (plug-in for WP)

@tferriss i like the burn their name into the PDF when you generate it. social controls beat technical controls as they dont hurt the honest

###

When I give a client a PDF which I don't want them to distribute I use the recipients own name as the PDF password. This doesn't stop them distributing the file but psychologically they think twice.

@tferriss ghostscript and print to pdf functions will obviate most attempts. Adobe Digital Editions?

@tferriss As iTunes accounts are authorised on computers, can't you specify users on a PDF? Get one, view properties & check "security" tab.

###

###

I use a program called PDF2EXE...makes the PDF an executable file that can't print or be copy/pasted.

Works pretty well, but not MAC compatible.

Here is a video about how to secure your documents in the latest version of Acrobat - Acrobat X:http://acrobatusers.com/au

Lasers with Linkin Park: A Thousand Suns

0907002151

Just finished a killer listening party for Linkin Park's new album "A Thousand Suns."  One hour of lasers and jamming music.  Linkin Park is one of the few bands that can reinvent and still keep their oldest fans cheering.  50,000,000+ albums... amazing.

Thanks to Mike Shinoda for the kind invite!
