Answers to the question: how do I prevent a PDF from being shared?

For a project involving my publisher, I asked the following on Facebook and Twitter: "Question: any good way to DRM PDFs or otherwise make them less share-able if someone is selling them as e-books? Will share responses..."

At the end of the day, DRM doesn't work. Devoted hackers -- hell, even a motivated 10-year old -- can break it, take screenshots, or whatever. In some cases (as Paulo Coelho, among others, believes), giving away "pirated" copies sells more books for authors. But, when it comes to the publisher, the question is: how do we prevent sharing?

There are generally two approaches: technical and social. If you're going to try and minimize sharing, I prefer the latter, as it doesn't punish or inconvenience paying customers/users/readers.

Here are some of the solutions proposed (separated by ###):

I do sell ebooks through ejunkie.com and I have them set up so it automatically prints the name and email address of the person buying it on every page. Doesn't keep 'em from being shared but many make people think twice about doing it

When I give a client a PDF which I don't want them to distribute I use the recipients own name as the PDF password. This doesn't stop them distributing the file but psychologically they think twice.

I use a program called PDF2EXE...makes the PDF an executable file that can't print or be copy/pasted.

Works pretty well, but not MAC compatible.

Ah, Floripa, Brazil. These old pics, which a friend found, were taken in 2007, just as I was finishing editing on The 4-Hour Workweek. In the pic with wine, where I have a pencil in my hair, I'm leisurely doing editing by hand at a night club as we polish off bottles of wine (might explain a few inside jokes in the book).

Note the yerba mate on the beach, not to mention the ridiculous look on my face. Gotta love Argies. I'll be headed back to South America soon...

Thank you to all of you friends on the blog, Twitter, and Facebook for helping with the latest DonorsChoose.org experiment: "Almost Home." You should all be very proud of yourselves!

It was a success, and a real innovation in the world of not-for-profits.

How it worked: DonorsChoose.org moved left-over funds from prior campaigns to get as many projects (at US public schools) within a few dollars of completion. The hypothesis was that potential donors would be more likely to donate if they could complete projects vs. just get them closer to completion. It didn't require any more cash, just intelligent allocation.

The end result was that $30,000 became $38,278.

Cool.

Big thanks also to Matt Mullenweg and Automattic for stepping up to the plate. Upward and onward.

It's not hard to find a suitable starch-free dinner in most airports. Tonight's choice -- Indian chicken curry, steamed Asian greens (like collard), chicken salad, cherry tomatoes, and olives. Just omit bread, rice, or tortillas, depending on the cuisine you're limited to.

Lunch at Le Monde in NYC with Nassim Taleb. I was impressed by his protein intake: at least 80 grams in one sitting. Two omelets and a steak. Considering the injuries I'm inflicting on myself, I need to improve my digestive game. Per his suggestion, also now reading "Plato: The Last Days of Socrates."
